Control of gastrointestinal nematodes in organic beef cattle through grazing management Organic Eprints
Hertzberg, Hubertus; Figi, Rolf; Noto, Fabio; Heckendorn, Felix.
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a major health and economic risk factor in ruminant production in organic and conventional farms (Thamsborg et al., 1999). Fattening of organic beef cattle (OBC) on pasture is an emerging area for organic farmers in Switzerland, which partly compensates the declining development in dairy production. So far, there are no data available about the parasitic status of beef cattle kept in organic farms between weaning (4-6 month) and slaughter (24-26 month). The aim of the present study was to assess the parasitological status of organic beef cattle in the pre-alpine and alpine region of Switzerland and to analyse the benefits of different grazing strategies for GIN control.

Coordination of European Transnational Research in Organic Farming Systems Organic Eprints
Bertelsen, Ulla Sonne; Halberg, Niels.
Organic agriculture and food markets have grown considerably, and organic agriculture addresses important challenges of European agriculture, such as the sustainable production of high-quality food, reducing dependency on high energy inputs, improving environmental and nature conservation, climate change adaptation, animal welfare and rural livelihoods. Organic farming and food systems still have a huge potential for innovation and improved solutions. Research activities will be important for this.

Coordination of European transnational research in organic food and farming Organic Eprints
Jespersen, Lizzie Melby; Halberg, Niels.
Research in organic food and farming is a fairly new, but rapidly ex-panding, discipline on the European research scene. One of the problems faced by the authorities seeking to initiate research programmes in organic food and farming is that the present research effort in Europe is caracterised by small research communities, which are often scattered and fragmented both geographically and institutionally. Therefore a gathering of the dispersed expertise to a critical mass in order to increase the competitive quality and relevance of the research as well as the dessemination and use of research is needed.

CORE Organic Defra-UK Country Report Organic Eprints
Defra, The Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs.
This report was provided by Defra to support the work of the partners to the Core Organic ERANET. Its focus is the Defra Organic Farming and Food R&D programme. Other public bodies in England and Wales can support R&D relevant to the organic sector. In addition, the developed administrations in Scotland and Northern Ireland support some relevant R&D within wider R&D programmes. Therefore this report should not be regarded as a complete account of all UK R&D relevant to the organic sector. Until the mid 1980s, organic farming R&D in the UK was led by the private sector, notably the Soil Association (founded in 1946), the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA, founded in 1954) and the Elm Farm Research Centre (EFRC, founded...

Country Report on Organic Farming Research in Norway Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Schjøth, Johanne E..
To increase organic production and achieve the official aims, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (until 2004: the Ministry of Agriculture) has developed a national policy specifically targeting organic farming. This is described in the action plan Prioritised Areas within the Food- and Agricultural Research, which is linked to the White Paper of 1999. Organic farming is one out of seven topics to be prioritised for research funding. For this farming method, the Ministry considers the following needs to be of greatest importance: To reduce various biological and economical risks linked to production; to increase the diversity and quality of organic products in the market and the general knowledge of organic markets and consumers; and to increase the...

Country Report on Organic Farming Research in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas; Niggli, Urs; Willer, Helga; Fried, Padruot M.; Strasser, Freddie; Dubois, David; Baumann, Daniel; Kaufmann, Robert; Gallmann, Peter; Charles, Raphael.
The report presents the current (2005) status of organic farming resarch in Switzerland. Switzerland has a long history of organic farming research, which in its beginnings has been carried out by organic farming pioneers and by private institutions like the Goetheanum, Möschberg Centre and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL). It was in the 1990s, when Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Stations (Agroscope) became also involved in organic research topics. It can be estimated that currently approximately € 7.5 million per annum are allocated very specifically to organic farming research from public budgets. The National Research Programme is organised according to a four-year research concept of the Swiss Federal Office of...

Country Report on Organic Food and Farming Research in Germany Organic Eprints
Lange, Stefan; Williges, Ute; Saxena, Shilpi; Willer, Helga.
Recently, research about organic farming has gained strong impulses in Germany. Schools of higher education, as well as state research centres steadily opened up, and with the funding under the Federal Organic Farming Scheme BÖL1 organic farming research has been strengthened substantially. Research about organic farming has a long tradition in Germany, going as far back as into the twenties of the last century. At that time the first – mainly biodynamic – pioneers started to carry out research on their farms. The Institute for Biodynamic Research IBDF2 founded in 1950, was one of the first private research institutions in the world. Also the first university chair for organic agriculture emerged in Germany, where until today more specific...

Criteria for the a-biotic and biotic realm: environment and ecology Organic Eprints
van Mansvelt, J.D.; Znaor, Darko.
This work is an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, widely-calibrated checklist for EU sustainable landscape management, which is intended to serve both as an analytical tool of reference as well as a design tool for local, regional and European policy making on sustainable developments. The tool has been developed out of a multidisciplinary study in EU countries which was designed to find out what would be the overall requirements for a sustainable management of the landscape of rural areas. Could these stipulations be brought together in a comprehensive system with sufficient consistency to comply with the notion that the landscape is an entity, which should be managed accordingly? Cooperation of the scientific experts with those involved in the...

Crop agronomy in organic agriculture Organic Eprints
von Fragstein und Niemsdorff, P.; Kristiansen, P..
Organic crop husbandry is based on practices outlined in the various organic standards that have been developed and documented in many countries. The most widely recognised organic standards are those published by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM 2002). Organic farming methods emphasise the use of internal on-farm inputs rather than externally sourced inputs to achieve essential soil fertility, nutrient management and plant protection goals. Self-regulation within an agroecosystem, multi-year management cycles and a focus on prevention rather than reaction, are key principles in organic farming that underpin organic plant production.

Current issues in organic food: Italy Organic Eprints
Canavari, Maurizio.
This chapter suggests some relevant topics for further analysis of organic farming and organic food markets in Italy. The discussion regards different aspects, taking into consideration farmer issues, supply chain issues, consumer issues, policy and trade issues, including farmers’ income, sustainable development and international trade. All these aspects show important implications with organic agriculture. A final section takes into consideration further emerging issues, linked to globalisation and to the need to foster further research activities in support of the diffusion of organic farming not only in Italy, but also in developing countries.

Dairy farms: constraints and recommendations for enhancing health, welfare and food saftey (Workshop results) Organic Eprints
Smolders, G.; Walkenhorst, Michael; Padel, S..
Results - It is necessary to improve the information to the public (who are the taxpayer and pay the subsidies) about organic farming as a system, that improves animal health and welfare. - Consumers must get accurate information about the organic products they buy. - Producers should be informed about organic farming before they convert (so they know what to expect): they should be told about the regluations and pointed to the available information about organic farming. - Veterinarians should be informed (part of the teaching curriculum in vet schools) about the holistic system, the importance of preventive health management on organic farms and about alternative treatments. - In communication to the policy makers (the government), organic...

Daten- und Informationsmanagement im ökologischen Landbau in Europa - EISfOM ein Projekt zum Aufbau eines Informationssystems für ökologische Märkte Organic Eprints
Recke, Guido; Hamm, Ulrich.
